Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner

The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency is headed by the Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.

Ferda Ataman was elected as Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner by the German Bundestag in July 2022.

On a proposal by the Federal Government, the German Bundestag elects the Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner for a term of five years. She is to be involved in all projects affecting her duties. She can make proposals and submit opinions to the Federal Government. In cases where someone contacts the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency because they feel discriminated against, and the agency seeks an amicable settlement between the parties involved, the Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner can ask the parties to submit opinions if the person that has contacted the agency has given their consent.

All federal ministries, other federal authorities and federal public bodies are required to support the Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner in fulfilling her duties, in particular to provide the requested information.
